CEHS meetings and conferences
CEHS does not hold its own, stand-alone scientific conference. Instead, taking advantage of its status as an affiliated society of the American Historical Association (AHA), it regularly sponsors a variety of sessions on German, Habsburg, and Central European History at the AHA’s annual meeting. It is also at this meeting that CEHS holds its yearly statutory business meeting. In addition, CEHS normally hosts a Bierabend for members of the society following this business meeting.
CEHS sponsorship of sessions at the AHA meeting takes two forms. CEHS typically co-sponsors a number of panels, including the CEHS presidential session, which have been submitted to and accepted by the AHA’s program committee. CEHS also directly (or “solo”) sponsors panels for inclusion on the AHA program, whether they be panels that the AHA’s program committee could not accept or panels that were not vetted by the AHA’s committee. All requests for solo sponsorship are reviewed by the CEHS executive board to ensure that the session is of a level of scholarly interest and quality to merit being on the program. Furthermore, all panels submitted for solo sponsorship must respect the AHA’s guidelines for panel composition; it is also expected that they demonstrate gender diversity.
A specific call for solo-sponsored sessions is normally announced in late April. Details on submission requirements are given as part of the call, which may be found under the News section of the CEHS website.
