Funding

As part of its mission to support research into the history of Central Europe, CEHS has established two programs that provide financial assistance to scholars in the early phases of their careers: ABD doctoral students and recent PhDs.

Research and travel grants

Each year, CEHS awards a number of grants to support short-term research trips outside of North America by doctoral candidates and recent postdoctoral scholars in Central European history. Currently, each grant has a maximum value of $4,000. Applications are normally due in mid-January for travel and research to take place later in that same calendar year.

Emerging scholar program

To promote and facilitate the participation of emerging scholars at major academic conferences, namely the American Historical Association’s annual meeting — which also serves as CEHS’s annual conference — CEHS annually provides assistance to the formation of up to two (2) sessions of research papers by ABD doctoral students and recent PhDs. The assistance includes helping to identify an appropriate chair and/or commentator for the session and working with the emerging scholars to fine tune the proposal prior to submission to the AHA’s program committee.  In addition, each emerging scholar who presents in a supported session receives a $1,000 stipend.
