Emerging Scholar Program

The emerging scholar program seeks to promote emerging scholars—advanced PhD students and individuals who have recently completed their doctorates—by helping them to present their research at a major scholarly conference, namely, the American Historical Association’s annual meeting, an accomplishment that remains an important indicator of scholarly productivity and excellence that, consequently, factors into professional advancement.
Specifically, during the fall of each year, CEHS helps organize and supports up to two panels on themes related to Central European history. Each panel consists of research papers given by three scholars, that is ABD doctoral candidates and recent PhDs (up to three years after degree completion). Panels featuring presentations only by emerging scholars are preferred, but panels with two emerging and one senior scholar will also be considered. At least two of the presenters must be based in North America.
The support CEHS provides is both organizational and financial. It first helps bring prospective panelists into contact with one another; these scholars then develop full panel proposals (session title, abstract, paper titles and abstracts) and submit them to CEHS.
After selecting up to two of these proposals for support, a special CEHS committee then works with each panel’s organizers to polish and finalize the proposal for submission to the AHA’s program committee. Any panel not accepted by the AHA is scheduled as a CEHS-sponsored session at the meeting. Finally, all emerging scholars presenting as part of a sponsored panel receive a $1000 stipend.
